Heroin used to treat heroin addicts?

More lunacy from the socialist harm reduction front - a study in the UK claims that giving government-controlled heroin to treat heroin addiction reduces the mortality rates and crime associated with the self-inflicted trap.

The harm reduction approach always has been that you should minimize the amount of damage caused to society - which is all well and good, but there are much more effective addiction treatment centers that can help eliminate the problem all together instead of using public funding to give people more drugs. If government-sponsored programs like this were the only treatment available then we would never save addicts - they would be lost to their addiction until they die from it. Here in the U.S. there are thousands of young people who try drugs for the first time each day, so those who become addicted would be lost forever - and at our own expense! Why not try and get them into a long-term rehab program with documented success instead?!
